Jane Browning & Co. (Isle of Man)
This notice is issued by the Financial Supervision Commission (“the Commission”) in accordance with the powers conferred upon it under Section 22 of the Financial Supervision Act 1988.
'Jane Browning & Co. (Isle of Man)'
The Commission has been made aware of faxes allegedly originating from “Jane Browning & Co (Isle of Man)”. The faxes claim that the company operates from 47 Victoria Street, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM1 2LH.
Although 47 Victoria Street, Douglas is a legitimate business address, the postcode IM1 2LH refers to a different address. The postcode IM1 2LH has featured in Public Warnings issued by the Commission earlier in 2003, relating to the same type of activity, in connection with 'Connex Holdings (Isle of Man)', 'Janet Brown Holdings' and 'Janet Brown & Co. (Isle of Man).'
Jane Browning & Co. is not a company incorporated within the jurisdiction of the Isle of Man. It is not registered as a foreign company having established a place of business on the Isle of Man. It is not registered as a business name on the Isle of Man.
The text of the faxes expresses an interest in the services provided by the recipient, and asks the recipient to make an immediate telephone call to Jane Browning & Co. to discuss further requirements. Subsequent information obtained by the Commission suggests that the recipients of the faxes may inadvertently incur premium rate telephone charges if they call the numbers specified on the faxes.
None of the telephone numbers provided on the faxes is an Isle of Man number, and all appear to be issued by United Kingdom telecommunication providers.
The Commission would strongly urge persons receiving faxes purporting to originate from Jane Browning & Co. to refrain from calling any numbers listed, bearing in mind the contents of this Public Notice. The UK Department of Trade and Industry issued a warning about text, email and fax scams on 11th November 2002.
