The Commission has recently become aware of correspondence received by members of the public purporting to have been sent by an entity, Mefco Oil.

An address given for this entity is “Mefco Oil Drive, Douglas, Isle of Man”. The Commission can confirm that this address does not exist here in the Isle of Man.

The correspondence sent to members of the public is in regard to a purported job offer from Mefco Oil.

Within the above website there is also mention of a company called Petroleum Brasileiro Isle of Man Limited.

The Commission wishes to draw attention to the following observations:

None of the above entities are companies incorporated within the jurisdiction of the Isle of Man. They are not registered as foreign companies having established a place of business on the Isle of Man. They are not registered as business names on the Isle of Man.

The Commission has established no association between the above entities and any genuine Isle of Man companies.

The Commission has established no genuine links between the above entities and the Isle of Man.

Update: 18 February 2010

The Commission has become aware of further documentation including a “Terms of Employment” letter, which purports to have been sent by a “Mr George Moseley, HR Manager, Mefco Oil and Gas” and is in regard to a bogus job offer. This documentation shows an extended address, to the one given above, of “31-36 Mefco Oil Drive, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM2 4LG”, which we can again confirm is an address that does not exist in the Isle of Man.

Also within this documentation it mentions a different website address from the one previously stated. This website also claims that the contact address for Mefco Oil is “31-36 Mefco Oil Drive, Douglas, Isle of Man, IM2 4LG”; again, this does not exist here in the Isle of Man.

All telephone numbers seen on this documentation are not genuine Isle of Man telephone numbers.

Further documentation makes reference to a “Mefco Recruitment Service”. Also, recruitment emails sent to potential employees are sent by a “Jacob Das, Head of Recruitment Services”.

Under the circumstances the Financial Supervision Commission feels that this correspondence is being issued to tempt the recipient into becoming the victim of an Advance Fee Fraud.

Is an attempt at gaining personal data from the recipient in order to steal their identity.

Under the circumstances the Commission would encourage people receiving correspondence matching the above description to refrain from responding to it in any way.

Any persons who have paid out funds in relation to the above correspondence or who have provided personal financial details in relation to the above correspondence should consider contacting their local police fraud unit without delay.
